Downtown Victoria

Thursday afternoon, the team was able to meet up with former Pamoja volunteer, Erynn Saunders. Erynn had also just recently returned from Tanzania and had a hand in helping create this site and the En-kata Choir’s business cards that the Maasai are handing out to invite people to their performances.

First, Erynn took the Maasai to a park where the women chased peacocks and the entire team released some energy on a playground (more on that later).

Then, we continued on to Mile 0, where we met a runner who had just finished a marathon and was pleasantly surprised to meet some Maasai warriors. We continued on the the shore and took in God’s beautiful creation as the sun set. Just across the water we could see the mountains of the States.

When the Maasai were sufficiently cold, we made our way downtown to the Empress Hotel and the Legislature Building. Here, we saw horse and carriages. The Maasai had never ridden horses, so we asked if we may pet them. The greatly obliged. Then, when the owner started asking us about who we were and such, he asked if the choir might sing just a little. They were just as grateful to oblige.

After hearing the Maasai sing, he told his carriage drivers to give us all rides. The Maasai were overjoyed. What a great delight! Maliaki was looking a little tense as we took off, so we told him to relax. At this, Maliaki slouched down in the seat, kicking back and making himself comfortable. “This is like the old bosses,” he says. Our carriages took a lap around the Legislature Building and back to where we hopped on. Surely, this would be an experience to remember.
