Day 2: Laundry, Fish, and Barbies.

Submitted by on August 9, 2009 – 3:48 pm2 Comments

Day 2 was a whirlwind of activities here in San Antonio, Tx.

At home, the Maasai (Masai) do their laundry by hand in a basin. Yesterday they learned to use a washing machine! Their favourite part was putting the coins in and pushing them in to make the machine start!

JoAnna spent a lot of time with Mathayo, and has given him an American name; Matty. He loves it, and is learning to respond to it! They played frisbee, learned to play the alphabet song on the piano, and practiced writing everyone’s names with sidewalk chalk.

Kim took Mathayo and Sifa to Walmart to buy some odds and ends. She wasn’t with us yesterday when we went, so she loved watching Mathayo intuitively ‘ride’ the shopping cart. She took them to see the fish in the aquarium and they exclaimed “Samaki! Samaki!” (Fish! Fish!) They wondered if they were to eat, and they wondered if they bite!

We had visitor after blessed visitor come by our dorm today. They brought gifts, and spent time, and gave us their friendship, blew bubbles with us, and bought us ice cream. Really, it was overwhelming to be surrounded by such a feel of community here on the other side of the world. Thank you all so much.

One of the gifts brought was a Sacajawea Barbie. Sifa (14 years old, who’s never before had a doll of any sort) walked into the room and was immediately drawn to it! She picked it up, and took it outside with her. She sat down, and intuitively played with it’s hair, took all its clothes off, and popped off its head! …then proceeded to put it all back together again!

We practiced for our first performance yesterday, and there were gasps and “Oh ya ya”s when the Maasai (Masai) walked into the IBC audotorium.  The ceiling is SO high! The movie-theatre chairs! Wow.

It was a good day, and tomorrow morning is our first program at Destiny Church here in San Antonio!
